EXCERPT FROM STATEMENT
"I utilize the black swan paradox (a bad omen for an unexpected factor) to explore white flight suburbia and how it feels to be a person of color existing in a space I was never expected to exist in. Therefore, throughout this series, I focus heavily on assimilation and the process I must undergo to live in this space where I fail to be seen. Exploring ideas of invisibility, presence, and absence, I relied on artists such as Nick Cave and Firelei Baez to create a "swan suit" or piece of architecture that I could wear to transform into a higher life form. This process of becoming something else to assimilate relates directly to presence and absence; I’m physically existing in this place while at the same time erasing my identity to undergo this process."
